Not every yes means the same thing
One person, one vote protects equality. It also makes every yes the same size. Quadratic mechanisms try to let conviction count without letting one person take over.

They got the key. Then somebody sent a poll.
The local repair group now had a room every second Tuesday, a cupboard of tools and a small neighbourhood grant. The next step could be a better soldering station, a beginner evening, a properly sorted parts cabinet or one extra opening each month.
All four sounded useful. A normal poll could count how many people preferred each one. It could not show that six people mildly liked the extra evening while four people cared deeply about helping beginners get through the door.
The poll counted hands. It missed how tightly they were raised.
01 / Signal
Every yes is the same size
One-person-one-vote protects something essential: equality. It also turns every preference into the same unit. A shrug and a please-let’s-do-this arrive as identical marks.
One-euro-one-vote catches intensity, but confuses caring with having money. Attention systems find a third way to flatten things: the person willing to repeat themselves most becomes the largest voice in the room.
None of those shapes is always wrong. They just hear different things. The design problem is allowing emphasis without allowing capture.
02 / Voice
A volume knob, not a megaphone
Quadratic voting tries a middle shape. Give every member the same non-transferable voice credits. One vote for an option costs 1 credit. Two votes cost 4. Three cost 9. Four cost 16.
A stronger preference remains possible, but doubling your voice costs four times as much. Another member’s first vote still costs 1. Conviction can register without letting one participant keep turning the volume up at a constant price.
Quadratic is a shape, not an answer.
It does not discover the objectively correct repair-room plan. It collects a richer signal about what the group cares about.

03 / Pool
Many small hands
Quadratic funding applies the same intuition to a matching pool. It pays attention to the breadth of independent support, not only the largest transfer.
Suppose one person contributes €16. The unconstrained quadratic score is 16. Now suppose four people contribute €4 each. Direct contributions still total €16, but the score is 64: the four square roots are 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8, and 8 squared is 64.
That 64 is a comparison score, not a promised €64 payout. A real round normally scales every allocation to fit the available matching pool. The useful observation is simpler: four independent signs of support say something one larger transfer cannot.
04 / Repeat
Paying to repeat yourself
The pattern can also shape a noticeboard, community homepage or event screen. A person might pay $1 for the first extra minute, $2 more for their second and $3 more for their third. Someone else can extend the same message for their own first-minute price of $1.
Those increasing marginal prices are not the same convention as the 1, 4, 9 and 16 voting totals. They share one idea: repeated support from one person and fresh support from another are different signals.
Most software removes friction. Collective software sometimes needs to shape it. The noticeboard should not become one person’s podcast with drawing pins.
05 / People
Make the deciding room smaller
Preference intensity is only one problem. People also need a reason to pay attention. Sortition selects a smaller random or carefully stratified group, then gives those people time, information and a meaningful chance to influence the result. Combined with quadratic voting, each selected person’s judgment becomes large enough to think about on a human scale.
Selection design, representation, preparation, compensation, legitimacy and accountability do not disappear. Neither does the work before the formula: who belongs, who receives equal credits, who puts proposals on the ballot, what counts as independent support and where the matching money comes from.
A curve cannot create trust. Fake identities can turn one person into many. Friends can collude or trade support. Votes can be bought if people can prove how they voted. Real money leaves a wealth effect. Popular projects have a distribution advantage. Matching pools run out. Complexity, strategy and low-information participation can blur the signal.
Some questions should stay outside the mechanism altogether. Rights, protection from discrimination, safety rules and decisions that require expert judgment are not improved by letting the strongest preference bid higher. The formula is never outside the group’s choices about identity, boundaries and legitimacy.
Further out, there is a more speculative idea: judge which public goods proved useful after time has passed, while earlier backers bet on that later quadratic judgment. It might help unusual work whose value arrives late. It also brings speculation, manipulation, evaluation and liquidity problems. Interesting to test. Very far from a recommendation.
06 / Shape
A shape, not an answer
Back in the repair room, the group still has to decide what belongs on the ballot, who counts as a participant and which decisions need care rather than preference arithmetic.
The curve cannot choose the right next step for them. It can let conviction register, make domination expensive and let another person matter.
A better signal does not remove the human decision. It gives the group more resolution while making it.
That feels worth trying in small, bounded places: a grant, a priority list, a shared budget or one stubborn noticeboard.
